My Dearest Dearest

Your dear letter of yesterday has just come by second post — there is nothing to get me up on Monday mornings, as no letter comes from you till 11. I might have sent yesterday’s letter to Peppard as you go up so late. No, I have not talked to any charming muslined young ladies. Miss Harrison is the only lady here that I have talked to at all. They will have a job finding that Cambridge lady I am supposed to be devoted to. Miss H. was very friendly and obviously quite reassured. She did not ask anything. It rather amuses me that she should expect me to make a Roman holiday by being ascetic for her pleasure. She has never aimed herself at giving people that particular pleasure. It was rather hateful talking to her, because I had to give a false impression favourable to myself.

Your flowers are still just as lovely as they were. I arranged them very cunningly as to colours. Every one remarks on their beauty —

Darling it must be settled what you would like for your birthday. I should like to give you something like a ring (an engagement ring!) or something that would equally belong to you — only I should not dare to choose such a thing by myself because I have no taste or knowledge in such matters. You will have to help me tomorrow.

My Dearest heart, your jealous shade would not find much material — it would find your image burning wherever it appeared. You are never out of my thoughts for two minutes together, whatever I am doing. I am always longing for you, and merely filling up the time till I see you again. Nothing else seems of any importance — except that I must be a better person because of our love, and must do what comes in my way to do.

Darling, I am longing for tomorrow. I will arrive at 10.30. It is dreadful being away from you, my Life and my Joy. I keep you always in my heart, but I long for your arms and your kiss — Goodbye my Beloved, my Ottoline.

Yours utterly
B.
