Tuesday night

My Darling

It was a comfort to hear your voice in the telephone and know you were back. As soon as the telephone bell rang I knew it must be you and my heart began to beat and I lost all count of the conversation — but the maid somehow made a mistake and fetched Whitehead down from the top of the house where he was working — I heard him saying “Doctor Who?” and I saw what was happening. I thought the mistake would never get put right. Your letter from Paris came later. Yes I will come at eleven. The little house in Chelsea is let to the man who was looking at it before, for 2 months. I think I will take it at the end of that time, but meanwhile I couldn’t find anything suitable, because it ought to be a whole house. I am sleeping at the Westminster Palace Hotel tonight and going back to the Whiteheads to breakfast. — I haven’t much time now before the midnight post. Darling I can’t say how I long for you — it is more than it has ever been — it seems an eternity since last Wed. I am just wanting to push the hours on, to be their policeman and tell them to “step lively”. I am very sorry indeed that you found what I said about religion so troubling. There is no need. So long as there is no closed door, nothing matters.

It was disgraceful that you didn’t get a letter Monday night — I did my best. I hope you got two on Tuesday morning. I do want you Dearest — nothing else seems worth saying. Goodnight my life and my joy.

Yr loving
B.

Mrs Whitehead spoke of the flowers you sent with great gratitude.
