My Darling

Your letter which reached me this morning has given me the very greatest happiness — all the things you say are so beautiful and wonderful. I cannot begin to tell you of the joy you give me — gradually it will come to the surface, but just now it is just a song in the heart — I can’t find any words yet. Yes, the unexpected sudden talks were wonderful — they seemed each time to bring us closer together, and show a more perfect harmony. Don’t struggle to analyse your feelings and experiences — it will be a nuisance to you and not natural. Things will come out bit by bit of themselves.

Darling, I am absolutely happy, more happy than I thought any one could be — and when you say it is a beginning of new life to you, I hardly know how to bear the joy of it.

I am glad P. seems happy. The Wallas’s would naturally be depressed by the death of the child. She was obviously very unhappy about it when they told us — he seemed to be feeling it less, at least he began to make jokes.

Tomorrow I begin to be busy — I see pupils in the morning, to fix the time of my lectures, and in the afternoon I speak at Ely to a gathering of Women Liberals, on Adult Suffrage as usual. I don’t think I shall go to London Tuesday — at any rate you had better write here. — You had better let me know when you can what sort of dates it is worth while to keep free, even if it is very likely that nothing will come of it, because my time here gets very much filled up, and I do not want to find that I am tied at a time when you are free. Don’t be afraid I shall be disappointed if nothing comes of keeping dates free — I shall know it is a mere off chance, and not allow myself to count on things.

Let me know if my Philosophical Essays has not gone to Bedford Square, and I will write to the publishers again.

Dearest, I must stop now and concoct the plan of my lectures for this term.3 I will write again in time to reach you by the first post Tuesday. Goodbye, my Darling, my life, my Ottoline. I still feel you with me every moment, and it keeps me perfectly happy. I am yours absolutely.

B.
