My Dearest Dearest

This is only a line to greet you when you get up tomorrow, because my next letter won’t reach you at Studland till Sunday. Your two letters that reached me this morning were a great joy to me — yes we didn’t talk of half the things there were to talk about — that will come when we have more time together — now there seems no time for anything but the one great thing.

I went a long walk alone today — I felt so full of happiness and life that I hardly knew how to contain myself, I wanted to shout and sing, like the morning stars and the Sons of God. Even the east wind seemed delightful. You won’t like me if I become boisterous and jovial. How good it was to laugh at nothing together. I used to think you were too serious for much laughter. I think the first time I knew I was wrong was when I came to Peppard after the meeting at Henley. I was wildly excited that night, and I couldn’t make out why — of course it was you. I could easily have talked the whole night through without an instant’s pause, if I could have been listened to so long. Ever since then I have known you would laugh at the same things that I should want to laugh about. — Goodbye, my Dearest. Alys will be back soon, and I shall be less happy — but that does not touch the depths. Your love uplifts me and purifies me and gives me life and strength every moment.

Your
B.
