My Dearest
I am in a full carriage which makes it almost impossible to write. I begin to breathe when I get away from the atmosphere at Fernhurst. What makes Alys so difficult is the mixture of genuine suffering with insincerity and heroics, so that she rouses sympathy and antagonism at the same moment. Dickinson I found myself quite out of touch with. I had nothing to say to him.
The Ponsonbys on the contrary were very soothing — I went to tea there yesterday. The atmosphere was delightful — full of beauty, and giving one the sense of a good inner life.
I cannot write more in this crowd. Dearest I am hungry for you, and I count the hours till Wednesday. Your picture is a great joy to me — it has enough of you to shew your beauty and much of your character, but it looks sad. Goodbye my dearest love, my heart, my joy.
