Notes

  • 1.

[document] The telegram was edited from a photocopy of an Australian Postmaster-General’s Department form. Barely legible in an unidentified hand (probably the recipient’s) is a list of Melbourne newspapers to be notified about the press conference and the note (presumably a reminder to order) “1 bottle Scotch 2 bottles dry sherry”.

  • 2.

[date] Since the date-received stamp is illegible, the telegram has been dated from the location of the office of origin in Canberra, where BR spent only two full days (18–19 July).

  • 3.

    [recipient] See BRACERS 122352, n. 2.

  • 4.

DROME I.e. Essendon Airport, Melbourne, where BR arrived from Canberra on the afternoon of 20 July.

  • 5.

ONE HOUR AT HOTEL SUITE See Apps. I.13 and I.14 in Papers 26 for lengthy reports in two Melbourne newspapers of the press conference given by BR from his suite at the Menzies Hotel.
