BR asks Kanaar to reply to an article, "What Is Happening in Germany?", Forward, 15 Dec. 1945 which is critical of BR's "The German Disaster". Also in the file are two précis of Dr. Kanaar's unpublished book, "The Sign of the Hammer and Sickle", whose typescript is in the UCLA source. Each précis states that BR promised a foreword.

Capt. A.C. Kanaar M.D.
Dear Sir
I wonder whether you, or any one you know, would care to write a reply to the enclosed,1 which, as you will see, is a criticism of me. It seemed to me that a reply would be more effective if it came from some one who has been in Germany lately. The “rumours” numbered (1)–(6) are of course not things that I had stated. I have been concerned with “Save Europe Now” and have seen documents from you and others which were not to be quoted with names. Of course, if you write a reply, your name need not be published. If you can undertake it, I don’t want the enclosed back; if neither you nor any friend of yours can, I do.
Yours truly
Russell (Bertrand Russell)

write a reply to the enclosed Russell enclosed an attack on his article “The German Disaster”, Forward, 17 Nov. (B&R C45.25; 53 in Collected Papers 24). The attack was Tim Christie’s “What Is Happening in Germany? A Scots Soldier Replies to Bertrand Russell”, ibid., 15 Dec., and Kanaar’s “What I Saw in Germany” was the rejoinder on 16 Feb. 1946. See App. X in Collected Papers 24 for both.
