Dear John

Please let me know as soon as possible whether you would rather I came to London for the night of Sunday Dec. 17 or Monday Dec. 18. Either suits me, but I want to know which. When I come, I want you and Kate to dine with me somewhere; also, if possible, Pam and Daphne Phelps. If they can’t come to dinner perhaps they can come for a drink somewhere. I could bring a bottle of whisky if you know of a place where we can reverently consume it.

Will you please engage a room for me at a hotel whichever of the 2 nights you choose. My only engagement is BBC Monday 1–3.1 I shall want to see as much as may be of you and Kate.
