Dear Mr. Popkin,
My wife’s part in the preparation of my books was not purely secretarial, as will appear from acknowledgments in prefaces. There is a prefatory note to Authority and the Individual saying: —
“In the preparation of these lectures I have had the benefit of vital assistance by my Wife, Patricia Russell, not only as regards details, but as regards the general ideas and their application to the circumstances of the present day”
In the preface to my History of Western Philosophy I say: —
“As in most of my work during the last thirteen years, I have been greatly assisted, both in research and many other ways, by my Wife”
It was because her help had not been purely secretarial that I thought it only just to give her a share of royalties, a view in which she completely acquiesced.
Yours sincerely,
(Sgd.)
EARL RUSSELL.a
P.S. I enclose some bank statements, which please keep.
