Farley thanks Bayer for his phone call and encloses a cheque for seven months rent and two quarters water rate for the 8 Roland Gardens flat. Schoenman will be returning on the 9th and will get in touch.

132509

A note for Schoenman informing him that Farley has spoken to Martin Bayer and sent a cheque for fees related to Schoenman's original occupation of Roland Gardens. The note is unsigned and undated, but the letter to Bayer is from Farley and the same date presumed.

132510

Bayer thanks Farley for the letter and cheque, which has been forwarded to the estate agents. He states that "it has been made quite clear by us that this is a payment without prejudice."

132511

Addressed to "The Present Occupants", the letter announces Mr. Wood's desire to inspect the flat (3 Elystan Mansions) and asks them to call to tell him when would be convenient.

132512

Birkbeck & Co. request that future correspondence regarding 3 Elystan Mansions be communicated to them and not to the tenants. However, Mr Wood can make an appointment to see the flat with either Schoenman or Tinker.

132513

Birkbeck & Co. write to say that they tried to call, but could not get through. Mr. King is making representations to the landords regarding 3 Elystan Mansions and there will be more information on Monday.

132514

On whether to employ counsel in his appeal.

In John Slater's papers (Slater MS Coll 583, box 2, file 248) concerning Ronald W. Clark's biography of BR, there is a photocopy of this handwritten letter by BR. The photocopy was copied by hand by K. Blackwell and the copy proofread against the photocopy. Clark quoted (p. 240) a sentence from it and credited the letter to Mrs. Renee Tickell, who was the daughter of the recipient, E.S.P. Haynes. There is a copy in the Russell Archives of another letter to Haynes, this time at the Harry Ransom Center, U. of Texas (record 56174 is a holograph copy of this letter).

132515

On the "weakening" of Harvard's position re BR's appointment in the context of the CCNY affair.

132523

Birkbeck & Co. write to say that they tried to call, but Schoenman was not at home. Schoenman is to set up an appointment with King, Wood & Co. to make an appointment to view the accommodation. A copy of the letter to King, Wood & Co. is enclosed.

132524

Birkbeck & Co. advise Schoenman of the total costs of damages (at 10 guineas, plus £33.12s.0d) and include their letter to King, Wood & Co. regarding compensation to Schoenman and Birkbeck, including alternative accommodations at 39 Cadogan St. instead of 3 Elystan Mansions.

132525

Birkbeck & Co. advise Schoenman on two matters. The first that monies from the 3 Elystan Mansions issue will be credited to Earl Russell. Secondly, they will meet with Collin Duncan re: Daily Sketch.

132526

Bayer thanks Schoenman for sending the Lease and informs him that per the terms of the settlement it is essential that he take occupation of 28 Hasker St on 4 June 1962.

132527

King, Wood & Co. have promised to forward their cheque directly to BR. The letter for the Daily Sketch will be ready the next morning.

132528

Letter to the Daily Sketch asking them to publish a correction, and make compensation regarding costs proceeding from the article, as well as damage to their reputations. The article was titled "Russells Men Have a Private Fall-Out", published 24 May 1962 suggesting the Schoenman and Jon Tinker were deliberately defying the law and behaving "in a most reprehensible and unsocial manner".

132532

Yule responds that the gas bill he was sent was for the basement unit (28A), where Mrs. Clarke's daughter lives.

132533

Purdue and Greenhill return the gas bill to Yule, which remains in the owner's name and not in the tenant's.

132534

The bank is returning a cheque. It is sent to 22 Argyll Mansions, but is in the file for 22 Hasker St. and may be related to those matters.

132535

As per their telephone call, Purdue and Greenhill's valuers have arranged with Mr. Clements to check the inventory of 28 Hasker St. They will also arrange for a sub-tenancy reading to be taken for the gas and electricity meters.

132536

Farley confirms that they will meet Purdue and Greenhill's valuation department at 28 Hasker St on 22 February 1963 and that the fees are their responsibility and not that of Mrs. Clarke.

Pipe smoking (1891 for reasons of economy; Briar pipes).

Dr. Harley purchased this letter on eBay. A search of the digitized Tennessean did not turn up its publication in the columns of Ralph Morrissey, whose papers are catalogued at https://sos-tn-gov-files.tnsosfiles.com/forms/RALPH_G_MORRISSEY_PAPERS_1930-1956.pdf.

The dictated form of this letter is at record 14343.

132559

The electricity bill for 28 Hasker St.

132560

Purdue and Greenhill describe the state of the place and outline the cleaning to be done, at which time it will be reviewed again to see if more work is required.

132561

A note from Farley stating the F.J. Clement is up to date on payments owed. As there is no apparent addressee, it may have been written for the file.

132562

A statement of telephone charges for 28 Hasker St. for 9 February to 14 March 1963.

132563

Farley forwards the telephone account for 28 Hasker St.

132565

Farley sends a cheque from one of Clements' sons, and indicates his desire to sue.

132566

They acknowledge receipt of letter and enclosures dated 17 April 1963 re: Clements suit. There is no carbon for said letter present in the file.

132567

A small envelope addressed to Clements at 28 Hasker St with no contents. Cancelled 16 April 1963.

132568

A final notice telephone bill for 28 Hasker St.

132569

A small form from Fortnum & Mason. The form indicates who packed the order and the name (misspelled as "Clemence") and address. There is a note on the back that reads "2 Boxes in Basement Cellar" with an unidentified signature. It is unclear if the note has anything to do with Fortnum & Mason or if this was simply a convenient piece of paper.

132570

A record of telephone charges. The sender is not identified, but it is likely the GPO. And it is presumably charges to Hasker St. as it is in that file. However, there is nothing on the document itself to indicate this.

132571

An invoice reminder of charges up to 12 March 1963 for 28 Hasker St.

132572

Purdue and Greenhill enclose the gas account up to 17 April 1963 (not present) for 28 Hasker St.

132573

A form letter indicating the electricity meter reading for 28 Hasker St. was taken on 29 Mar. 1963 from 12 Mar. 1963.

132574

A form letter indicating the electricity usage for 28 Hasker St. was taken on 4 June 1963 from 29 Mar. 1963.

132575

Purdue & Greenhill write to say that having now taken possession of 28 Hasker St. they have found that the telephone had been disconnected for non-payment and that the electricity has also gone unpaid and will be cut off soon. They have paid the outstanding telephone bill from the deposit, but do not have enough to also cover the electricity. They ask that a cheque be sent to cover the balance.

132576

Yule responds to the 5 June 1963 letter regarding the outstanding telephone and electricity, reminding them that they had not occupied 28 Hasker for some time and had not received the bills in question. In addition, there should have been no charges for the telephone since no one was living there. Yule asks Purdue to send details and will address the matter promptly.

132577

Purdue clarifies the dates for the telephone charges, which correspond with the time it was occupied and asks if the sum for the electricity can be delivered by 3 pm the following day to keep the electricity on. Finally, he notes that they received a note from BR indicating that keys were enclosed, but the keys were not there. Mrs. Clark has changed the locks in compliance with insurance regulations and that bill will also be forwarded to Yule.

132578

Purdue and Greenhill send the gas account for 17 April to 4 June and ask that Yule send a cheque promptly.

132579

BR is honoured to be invited to be the William James lecturer; however, he has obligations at the University of California, and does not have any material prepared, nor would he have time. He could speak on semantics, but fears it "would be too technical and of insufficient general interest". He asks if 1942-43 would be possible.

A photograph of a carbon of a typed copy is at record 131181

132580

Farley outlines sums for telephone, electricity, and gas owed to them by Clements for 28 Hasker st. He asks Bayer to proceed with a writ immediately.

132581

Purdue and Greenhill forward the final accounts for outstanding bills and dilapidations related to 28 Hasker St.

132582

Further to a telephone call Farley had with Mr. Murrell they also enclose a copy of a letter sent to Mr. Clements. The letter outlines proceedings against him and outstanding monies owed.

132583

Birkbeck fowards a copy of a letter from Clements [spelled "Clemence"; it is unclear if this was a typo by Birkbeck or the correct spelling of his name] asking for clarification on the electricity bill and arguing that 28 Hasker St. was in poor condition when he moved in. Birkbeck also forwards a copy of their reply to Clements regarding the electricity bill. Their letter to Farley asks for originals of all accounts so that they can send copies to Clements, as requested.

132584

Purdue and Greenhill request a cheque for the sum of £83.15. 3.

132585

Birkbeck forwards a copy of a letter from Clemence ("Clements") and will await further instruction. The letter insists that the electric light was included in a sum of £151 already paid and requests a detailed statement showing how this sum was arrived at.

132586

Farley sends a detailed breakdown of the sums owed by Clements.

132587

Birkbeck encloses two copies of the letter they sent to Mr. Clements with details regarding the charges. Birkbeck suggests that the copy of both letters also be sent to Ralph Schoenman who has called to complain of delays, which they cannot understand. Birkbeck suggests that perhaps Schoenman should set out his complaints in writing so they can be addressed. The letter ends with a postscript apologizing for requiring written authority on the matter, but it is "on account of the publicity angle".

The extra copies provided by Brikbeck are still in the file, suggesting that perhaps Farley did not forward them to Schoenman.

132588

Birkbeck is concerned about a receipt which Clements alleges he has in his possession and requests a photostat. They have enclosed a copy of the letter in which Clements makes this claim as well as a copy of their own letter in case Farley wants to send it to Schoenman. The copies remain in the file, suggesting he did not.

At this point in the file there is a carbon copy of BR's letter of 1963/09/29 to Julius, Coburn and Broad, record 132486. The copy has no document number.

132589

Purdue and Greenhill write directly to BR regarding outstanding amounts owed for 28 Hasker St after they do not hear from Yule.

132590

Edith has written “H MacColl” and BR “[a writer on mathematical logic with whom I disagreed]”.

132591

Farley provides details regarding the receipt that he issued Clements. He is leaving for Paris and indicates that Schoenman will be able to help if further information is required.

There is a handwritten note at the top that reads: "Ralph, Please note and follow up."

132592

These are three small scraps of paper concerning Plano:

(1) “from Peano, & therefore precious” in Edith Russell’s hand but presumed dictated by BR

(2) “Peano” in BR’s hand

(3) “Peano” in ER’s hand but presumed dictated by BR

All are in ink. They immediately precede the letters to BR from Peano, beginning at record 79719.

132593

Birkbeck advises that having seen the receipt, which did not make any provision for the cheques clearing, they will have to consider certain matters covered. Following that they give advise on the remaining outstanding bills.

132594

Birkbeck acknowledges Schoenman's instructions [enclosed] to carry on with the claims as they have advised. They ask him to return the various account statements as well as an updated report from the Bailiff.

132595

Purdue have not had a response from their 1 October letter. If the outstanding amount is not received by 21 October, their client will have to go to her solicitors.

132596

Scheonman sends the telephone and electricity accounts.

132597

Farley responds to the notification of outstanding amounts with a reminder to send the schedule of dilapidations and then he will settle the matter.

132598

Birkbeck thanks Schoenman for returning the telephone and electricity accounts.

132599

Purdue sends the schedule of dilapidations and confirms that there will be no additional charges beyond the £83.15.3.

132600

Birkbeck does not see it possible for them to pursue claims based on the receipt given to Clemence 19 March 1963 and asks to clarify continued pursuit of certain amounts.

132601

Farley reluctantly confirms that their claims against Clements are limited to the amount which the bailiffs are attempting to enforce and agree that Birkbeck should make this clear to him. He also asks for an update on the bailiff's progress.

132602

Birkbeck will communicate with Clemence after they have talked to the Bailiffs.

132603

Birkbeck write to clarify occupancy after Mr. Clements left to properly account for the telephone bill.

132604

Farley confirms that 28 Hasker St. was vacant after Clements left and agrees that there may be cause for reduction in the phone rental, but asks Birkbeck to consult the photostats or originals of those accounts which are with them.

132605

Birkbeck has communicated to Mr. Clements solicitors that a reduction in the amount of the phone rental of £1.10.0d if it is paid in the next seven days.

132606

Lindus & Hortin, Mr. Clemence's solicitors, ask Farley to check and see if an engraved silver plated punch bowl with six cups are in their possession. Mr. Clemence ordered it but it was delivered after he vacated.

132607

Farley is investigating if the punch bowl resides with them, but draws attention to the fact that Mr. Clemence vacated 28 Hasker St. 14 March, well after he placed the order with Fortnum & Mason. In addition, he suggests they contact the current occupants, as well as the woman who lives in 28a, who might better be able to assist.
