[This book must be William Cecil Dampier Whetham's The Foundations of Science (London: T.C. and E.C. Jack, [1912]), a 96-page book in "The People's Books" series. Philosophy (and formal logic and the principles of mathematics) are discussed on pp. 83-93 (with knowledge by acquaintance and knowledge by description on pp. 83-4). There is a reference to Whitehead's Introduction to Mathematics on p. 89.]
