Pipe smoking (1891 for reasons of economy; Briar pipes).
Dr. Harley purchased this letter on eBay. A search of the digitized Tennessean did not turn up its publication in the columns of Ralph Morrissey, whose papers are catalogued at https://sos-tn-gov-files.tnsosfiles.com/forms/RALPH_G_MORRISSEY_PAPERS_1930-1956.pdf.
The dictated form of this letter is at record 14343.

Dear Mr. Morrissey,
I am sorry that I have very little of interest to say in reply to your letter of October 18. I have never written anything about pipe smoking. I only smoke cigars or cigarettes on occasions when pipe smoking is not permitted. I prefer briar pipes. I smoke only Fribourg and Treyer’s Golden Mixture. I took to pipe smoking in 1891 for reasons of economy, but I now find little satisfaction in any other kind of smoking.
Yours truly,
