"The help that I gave to the School of Economics in its early days was very limited. I had a fellowship at Trinity lasting six years and bringing in £210 a year. I handed this over to the School of Economics to be used for awarding fellowships. The first award was given to F.W. Hirst. I was the first or nearly the first of the lecturers at the School of Economics where I lectured at the beginning of 1896 on German Social Democracy."
