"Concerning the contents of the article on Prosperity [Property], I must confess that I am somewhat disappointed.... The abolition of private ownership of land apply mainly to England and scarcely to America.... I am perfectly willing to publish Russell's article as it stands, but I would not hesitate to publish criticisms of it. I am afraid of the book, and I think first it would as a business venture be a complete failure."
"Thus I will say that I am willing to publish Mr. Russell's article, but I feel that I expose him unnecessarily and he might later on regret having written the article. I will hold it back until I hear from you that the article is seriously written and meant to see the light of publication."
