"I wish to bring to the attention of this Conference the case of Heinz Brandt who has been sentenced in East Germany to thirteen years of prison with hard labour. ... Heinz Brandt has been throughout his active life a devoted and self-sacrificing worker for peace and against West German re-armament. For eleven years during Hitler's régime, he was in prisons and concentration camps, including Auschwitz and Buchenwald. ... I hope that the Congress will pass a resolution asking for his release on these grounds."
